Domestic attorney
has wealth of legal experience
By Bridget Malone
Matrimonial and
domestic law has become increasingly complicated. One positive
trend that attorney Christopher Carroll has noticed is courts
are moving away from some of the gender bias common in
matrimonial cases years ago.
"The courts
have become much more educated and are becoming increasingly
more fair", said Carroll of the Law Office of Christopher
S. Carroll. Carroll tries to simplify the legal process
for his clients by taking on cases that run the gamut of
matrimonial law: marriage dissolution, child support, child
custody, disputes over visitation, among other related
situations.
Through his
24 years of litigating cases, Carroll has amassed significant
trial experience. In April 2002 Carroll represented former
Illinois Congressman Mel Reynolds in a trial where the embattled
politician was accused of domestic violence against his wife
Marisol.
Carroll also
gained experience in other facets of the law. For six years he
served as an insurance industry claims attorney for a Fortune
500 insurance company in the western United States. Carroll
argued cases with claims of $1 million and higher during that
time.
In the
mid -90's Carroll was included in the Who's Who in America Law
list, an honor given only to top legal professionals around the
country. Later in the decade Carroll decided to move
closer to his family and returned to Chicago. In July 1997
Carrol founded his own firm. While Carroll is the only attorney
on staff, he's not the only Carroll: His wife Min serves as
accountant and manager.
Since
then, Carroll, has been arguing criminal defense cases, DUI and
license reinstatement cases and some bankruptcy cases. But
the bulk of his practice is matrimonial law.
When
taking on a matrimonial case, Carroll says he recommends his
clients seek counseling to help deal with the stress.
"Divorce
is emotionally traumatizing," Carroll said. "It's
most important for a litigant to manage his or her emotions, so
I recommend that they see a qualified counselor".
Another tip Carroll gives anyone on the verge of a divorce
is to seek an attorney sensitive to his or her situation and
needs.
"I'm
very attuned to the emotional and legal needs of my clients, and
I understand I'm a fiduciary who wants to treat my clients with
fairness," Carroll said.
